What is the magic circle?

I have had a few people ask me about the Magic Circle/ Magic Ring.  Rather than answer in 5 different places, I decided to answer in a post.

"The magic loop, or ring method, is used for beginning a crochet project worked in rounds and produces a small neatly closed hole in the center of the first round. This method can be used for beginning hats, doilies, amigurumi and other projects worked in rounds."  Quote taken from Crochet! Magazine.
There is also a great photo tutorial on the page, if you follow the link.

For those of you, who are much like me, you will need a video to fully grasp the method.  There are a lot of great videos on youtube, but I find user Tjw1963 to be one of the best.  For her video tutorial go HERE.

In addition to this post, I have also started a Resources and Tutorials tab on the blog.  I will add to it from time to time with helpful hints and resources.

Please, keep the questions coming!  I love being able to assist you on your journey of Crochet.  There is always something new to learn!

Branching out

Are you on facebook?  I created a new fan page just for my designs!  I'd love if you would stop by and say hi!!  The page is Swirls and Sprinkles Designs.  I look forward to connecting with you over there.  I think it will be a fun way to be able to interact more with everybody.  :)
Ok, back to hookin, a hookers work is never done...
I could really use one of these!

Turtle Power

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have returned.  My son LOVES them!  I was trying to figure out some things that I could make him for Christmas.  For some reason, I have a harder time coming up with things for him, than I do for my daughter.  Let's face it, little girls are easier.  Anything pink, purple, flower, or frilly will do.  My son is harder to impress.  I am thinking that something TMNT will be a hit.  I decided to make him a set of 4 (there are 4 tmnt's after all) coffee Kozies.  Obviously, he doesn't drink coffee, but he brings a water bottle to school every day.  Why not make it a little fun by sliding a Kozie on there?!

I sat down with my hook case and yarn and this is what I came up with:

Tis the Season!

Finally, the rest of the world has caught up with my Holiday spirit.  I have been listening to Christmas music for months!  I think we should celebrate the beginning of the Christmas season with a fun Christmas hat pattern.  How about a SANTA HAT?!
Swirls and Sprinkles: Free crochet Santa hat pattern
My little Sprinkle wearing her sparkly Santa hat.  :)
My daughter LOVES her new Santa hat.  I have been making them for a few years and this is the first year that I made one with SPARKLE yarn.  Made. her. day.
Who says you have to us "Christmas colors"?  I love this blue and white hat.
Swirls and Sprinkles: Free crochet Santa hat pattern
White and blue Santa hat
The blue and white was not made with MY pattern, but it's still a Santa hat.  ;)

The hat works up quickly and fits a wide range.  I refer to it as a child hat, for children 3-10, but the hat has enough stretch that I wear them too.  The size is easily adjustable by switching hook sizes and adding/decreasing the increasing rows.

I hope you get as much use and joy out of this pattern as I have!

Snowflake 2

I received a lot great feedback about my Quick and Easy Snowflake!  (Thank you!  It means a lot to me, to receive feedback!)  I didn't realize that there are so many more people, like me, who hate working with thread.  I was asked by a few people if I was going to write up any more patterns for snowflakes.  The answer, YES!
Again, this one is not blocked yet.  Have I mentioned that I hate blocking?  Perhaps I will get around to it, perhaps not.  One of the great things about using yarn instead of thread, is that it will hold its shape a lot better, without being blocked.  ;)
Here is my second snowflake pattern.  (hopefully a lot more to come!)  This one works up just as quickly as the first one.

Crochet Santa Suit Hat

Who doesn't need a little HO HO HO?  My son saw something similar to this and asked me if I could make him one.  I hope he likes it.  He still doesn't know that it is finished, or that I even started it.  I would give it to him for Christmas, but then he wouldn't be able to wear it until next year.  I hope you like the new hat as much as my son!

Free Snowman hat pattern

I absolutely LOVE snow.  Unfortunately, OK doesn't normally get nearly enough snow for my liking.  Last year was a huge disappointment.  I am hoping that we get enough snow to play in this Winter, but in case we don't, I made my very own snowman.  :)

I hope you enjoy the pattern!

Small Candy Cane Ornament

I. Love. Candy Canes.  I don't know what it is about candy canes, but I have always loved them.  My daughter loves candy canes as much if not more than I do.  Every year, I have to buy a couple extra boxes of candy canes to last the entire year.  Those little starlight candies or peppermint sticks just won't do.  It has to be candy canes.  :)
Maybe that is why I was super excited to write up this pattern.  This is really quick and easy to work up and is very easy to assemble.  The finished candy cane measures approx. 4 inches long.  I think I will be attaching a candy cane ornament to the top of some of my Christmas gifts this year.  It is a really cute "little something extra".

Quick and Easy Snowflake

Looking for something quick and easy to make?  This snowflake makes and adorable ornament, would look great as a garland, and a gift tag.
I have not blocked this one yet, but want to give you an idea of how yours will look.  I am working on getting a lot of them made and will block them all at the same time.  I wanted to get the pattern up so you can enjoy it too!  When I have mine blocked, I will add the new pictures.

Crochet Earflap Hat

I love this hat pattern.  I use it all of the time.  You can change it up a million different ways.  Most character hats start out as either a basic beanie, or an earflap hat.  It just depends on what you put on the hat.  This is a great pattern to get you started!

I did it again!

After buying the Hanging Key hat pattern from Hooked in Yarn, I started to oogle another pattern, her Zaggin hat.  Guess what...I caved.  I bought the pattern and I am SOOO glad that I did!  How awesome is this hat?

I love her patterns.  The Zaggin hat is so much fun.  I can't wait to make a Christmas colored one.  Can't you just see it in red, green, and white?

Not only have I been busy with the patterns that I bought, I have also been lucky enough to test a couple of patterns for her.  She is so talented!
This is her Twisted Lines Hat.  I have claimed this hat as my own.  Yep, this year I have a brand new Winter hat.  :)

Simple Scarf Pattern

This is a crochet scarf that I have been making for a couple of years.  It works up really quickly and is easy to make.  It looks really great, too!  The scarf makes a great Christmas gift!  I know I am making one for my daughter in her favorite color.  I have already made a couple for myself as well!
Enjoy!!

Been busy!

Sorry I haven't posted anything new lately.  I haven't forgotten about the blog, I have just been busy with orders.  I have also started writing some Christmas patterns.  I have been going back and forth with whether I should just start posting the Christmas patterns, or if I should wait until after Halloween.
Tonight I am going to work on a couple of applique ideas.  I am hoping a couple work out, so I will have a new pattern to post tomorrow!
Are there any Christmas or Winter things you would like to see a pattern for?  Throw some ideas out there, I'd like to be sure to work on some things that people are looking for!  :)

Crochet Shelly Bag

This pattern had been sitting in my pattern tab.  I didn't realized I missed moving a pattern over to the main page!
This bag is AMAZING!  It is simple to make and good for anything!  This would make a great market bag, though if you use it as a market bag, you may want to use cotton yarn.  I use mine to tote coloring books, crayons, books, and what ever else my daughter wants to bring to my son's soccer games.  It also makes a great WIP on the go bag.
As always, if you have any questions or need help with anything in the pattern, just leave a comment.  I try to check in at least once a day.

Fun new hat!

It is not very often that I will buy a crochet pattern, but when I can't get something out of my mind for a couple of days I tend to cave.  This is one of those times.  A few days ago I saw a fb post for a really fun looking hat.  I tried to talk myself out of buying the pattern, I really did, but when I saw that there was a sale on the pattern I couldn't stop myself!  How can you pass up a sale?!
This is what I spent most of yesterday working on.
Swirls and Sprinkles: Fun crochet hat Pattern by Hooked in Yarn
New hat.  Pattern by: Hooked in Yarn
Yep.  3 hats in one day.  It's not often that I am given that kind of time by my kids, but when I told them they could have what I was working on they were a bit more patient with me.  These are great in team colors!  (that is my orange and blue OKC Thunder hat.  THUNDER UP!)  I love the striped affect in the hat.  How pretty would this be in pink and purple?!  My daughter would LOVE that.
These hats have a fun little surprise.  They have a great reverse pattern.  This is the hat inside out:
Swirls and Sprinkles: Crochet hat in reverse. Pattern by: Hooked in Yarn

How fun is that?!  2 very unique looks in one hat.  It's not very often that the inside of a hat looks as good as the inside.
The solid color hat is just as fantastic!  It has a wonderful texture.  I find the texture very fun.  So much more interesting that the typical HDC or DC that is usually seen.  I love that it's not just ribbed, but an actual texture throughout the hat.
Swirls and Sprinkles: Solid color crochet hat. Great texture. Pattern by Hooked in Yarn

All in all, I am VERY happy that I broke down and paid for a pattern.  I think this is the best buy that I have had in a long time.  I now have my eyes on another hat pattern of hers AND she has another item coming out in THIS pattern.  I can't wait to see it!!!

Yay Autumn!

This is by far my favorite time of year.  At least it is back home.  It is still in the 90's in OK.  :(
Not only am I excited that it is Autumn, I am excited because this is my busy time.
I haven't gotten a whole lot written up in the last week because I have been working on orders.  I think my best seller right now is a Mummy Hat.  I was lucky enough to get in as a tester for the pattern!

I am trying to work on some Christmas patterns.  I have some ideas written out and can't wait to work them up!
I hope you are all enjoying much cooler temps that I have been having.
If there is something that you are hoping to see a pattern for, let me know!  I am always looking to add to my library!

What I've been working on.

Well, here it is.  There are a couple of adjustments that I think I need to make, but over all I am very happy with it.  My daughter is thrilled and won't take it off for me to adjust.  LOL

I think it turned out to be more of a 2t length, rather than 3t.

Tonight I will be working on a new headband pattern.  I can't wait to get it finished!

Back to the grind.

We had a very fun weekend.  We took the kids to the local Six Flags park and they had a BLAST!  I don't know what is more fun, going as a kid or going as a parent watching your kids.  Truly one of my favorite days ever.
I have been busy working on a couple of orders, so the next pattern has been delayed just a bit.  I had one 90% finished and while looking it over I saw that it could be turned into something completely different!  Such is the life.  :)  I can't wait to show it off.  I don't know if I will be writing up the pattern to this newest item, but I will definitely have a new free pattern posted by the end of the week.
Have you worked up any of my free patterns?  Leave a comment on my feedback tab.  I would LOVE to hear from you.
I hope everybody is enjoying the last few days of summer!

Post Holiday

How was your Labor Day Weekend?  I hope everybody had a relaxing weekend.
Our weekend wasn't much different than most weekends.  Unfortunately, I didn't get nearly as much done as I had hoped.  Somehow the weekend just flew by.
Tomorrow is back to the grind.  My oldest goes back to school, which means I have to set my alarm.  :(
I plan on tomorrow being picture day.  I need new pictures of a few items, so I can get them listed on Etsy.  I need to start refocusing on selling.  It's hard to work with yarn and think of hats and scarves when it is still over 100 degrees.  I have to get started though!

3 Layer Crochet Flower

This is my go-to flower pattern.  I use the flowers on hats, bags, hair clips, and so much more.  They look great on the new water bottle Kozies, and coffee Kozies, too!

Building stock

It is going to be a busy weekend of hooking.  I really need to get some stock built up.  The busy season is practically here!  I am thinking newborn beanies, a couple pumpkin hats in a few sizes, coffee kozies, a few scarves, a couple ruffle scarves, and a few plain hats that can be jazzed up at a later time.  Oh!  Also a few pairs of slippers.
I also really need new pictures of my items for the Etsy shop.  Hopefully by Monday I will have enough finished for some more listings.  My shop looks sad with only 2 listings.  :(
I already have a few things on the hook.  That is a good start, right?

Clean up your room!

I feel like a child who's mom told them to clean their room.

Swirls and Sprinkles: Clean your room
I cant' be the only one to try getting away with this!

I realized tonight that I am going to have to reorganize my patterns.  *eep!*  I want to stomp my feet and cry that I don't wanna!  In the long run, it is going to make the patterns much more organized and easily found.  In the meantime I think it is going to be a headache.
I will be very happy when I get this all finished.  :)

I get by with a little help from my friends...

What a great weekend.  Well, for a bust of a weekend it was good.  We had outdoor plans, but the forecast didn't look like it would cooperate.  We made the decision to stay home.  Of course the weather held out and it would have been perfect for our outside plans.  Go figure.  I know that if we had gone out that it would have rained the entire day.  That's just the way it goes  for me.

Since we stayed home, we got some cleaning done and I got my crochet on!  It isn't very often that I can get a lot of crocheting done on the weekend, so when it happens I feel accomplished.  :)

I can't wait to show you what I made!  Before I do though, I have to let you know that this was not my pattern.  The crochet community is fabulous.  There are so many talented artists out there!  This will be the first of more posts to come with patterns from other artists.  I love the idea of collaborating with other artists and hope to have some guest posts in the future.

This hat was designed by Corina at Stitch11.  She has a lot of fantastic patterns on her site, this is just one of the many that she offers.  I will provide a direct link to her pattern on my free pattern tab (up at the top of the page).
How adorable is that?!  I love this design.  The pattern is written out very clearly and is very easy to follow.

One of the wonderful things about crocheting is that once you know the basics you can do so much!  I have taken this hat as inspiration to make an adult size.  I will be writing up the pattern soon.  I have so many patterns to write up that I don't know where to start!  :)

I hope that you will take a moment to visit Stitch11 and take a look around.  Even take a second and say hello and tell her where you heard about her site.  ;)

Is it Autumn yet?!

For months my daughter has been asking me to make her a special hat.  I put it off only because I found it depressing to make it when it was over 100 degrees.  Now that it has cooled off some (high 80's low 90's who knew I would ever call that cooled off?) I picked up my hook and got to work.
Swirls and Sprinkles: Crochet child pumpkin hat
Adorable, right?
She is so happy to finally have a pumpkin of her own.  I make a newborn pumpkin hat that she loves.  Now she has one all her own.  :)
I will get the pattern written up over the weekend.  I think this is my next free pattern.  Just in time for my favorite time of year!

Hip, hip, hurray!  It took me an hour to figure out how to get pictures to post using my dinosaur phone.  I finally did it, though.  I wish my phone took better pictures.  This is the black, white, and grey ruffle scarf that I am working on.  I am almost half way done.  This one is going to take two balls of yarn.  This is the second brand I have tried, and it is shorter than the first.  That's alright, though.  This brand has some sparkle on the ends and I think it gives the scarf a nice touch.
To anyone who gets notifications of blog posts.  I apologize for multiple post in a short period of time.  I was trying to figure all this mobile stuff out and had a few duds post.  :)

Back to school

No, not for me.  For my son.  He had his first day of 3rd grade last Friday.  Why they started on a Friday this year, I will never know.  LOL!  With being busy with back to school stuff at the end of last week I decided to give myself the weekend off.  Boy was that nice!  We spent a lot of time playing with the kids outside.  It was a very good family time weekend.
I did work something up though.  It took all weekend because I was just doing a few rounds at a time.  Who says only the kids should have a fun hat?

How great is that?!  I am going to be working on a child size, too.  I think this may be my next pattern.
Tonight I will be trying to get a variety of coffee sleeves made.  We'll see how I feel after the kids go to bed.

Who says YOLO?

I have had so many ideas floating around in my head.  I finally sat down and worked one of them up.  Let me tell you, it feels GREAT to check something off of the list.  Of course, I finish one thing and think of three more.  LOL!
So, who says you only live once?  This hat takes care of that!

1-up Mushroom.  I am working on a red one, too!
I have to say, there is something strange about making something that feels like a blast from my past, but is still very popular today.  I think I made my son the happiest kid on the block, tonight.
Now, on to the next project.  :)

Slow couple of days

So...not much going on these last couple of days.  Not to say that it hasn't been busy, just not very busy with crochet.
My son starts school on Friday.  Can you believe that, a FRIDAY!  Is it just me or is that a little strange?  Today we went to his school to find out who his teacher is.  I am very happy to say that I think she is going to be wonderful.  I am having a hard time adjusting to the fact that I have a 3rd grader.  I don't know where the time goes.
With school starting that means that I will be working on some pre-k skills with my daughter.  Next year she will be old enough to start pre-k.
I am looking forward to the weather cooling off.  Well at least for it to start up north.  Here in OK we don't start to really cool down until November.  I really enjoy the busy crochet season.  I think I have a lot of really great new items this year.  I have a great child slipper that I will be debuting soon.  I am really excited about them.  I made a pair for each of my kids and they both like them.  It's not always easy to please them both!

Since I haven't really worked on anything new over the last couple of days,  I will leave you will something cute.  My daughter doing her duck face.  :D

Monday already?

I don't know where the weekend went.  Over the weekend I didn't get as much finished as I had hoped to.  We just took it easy at home and did some relaxing.
I did manage to finally finish the bright pink hat, though!

This hat is adorable.  It has a lovely diamond pattern that wraps around the hat.  Here is a better picture of the detail:

I think this is my new favorite pattern.

Time to turn in

Swirls and Sprinkles: Easy crochet ribbed beret hat
Pattern by: Mamachee
I finally got pictures taken of the sage hat that I mentioned in my last post.  My daughter LOVES it!  She has now claimed this one as hers and hers alone.  Is she the cutest thing ever, or what?!
This shows the detail a bit better:

I also changed up my water bottle Kozie a bit.  The old style has a long strap so you can carry it on your shoulder:

This new Kozie has a short strap that you can button around the handle of your stroller or shopping cart!  Handy, no?

It can hold nearly any size container.  Large and small bottles, bottled water, and can be made to fit sports bottles.
I will be writing up a pattern for the new Kozie in the next few days.
There are a few more things that I have worked on, but I will post about them tomorrow.  Time for this tired pup to crawl under the covers and catch some zzzz's.
